Considering all that has been going on here, today has been a fairly good day.
Great in the fact that THREE ferrets got adopted. One of which, Sarah, I had expected to be here forever. Even though she is a BEAUTIFUL dark eyed white, I honestly didn't think she would ever get along with another ferret since she lost her cage mates Slinky to inslulinoma, and Sam, who had a fist size tumor removed.
She met her new friend, and sniffed him. Jane and his Mom put him into the cage with Sarah, she was cleaning his ears. A match. I am so happy for her, and her new family.
Our second adoption today was a pair, little Spook and Bubbles. Watching their new Mom and Dad was like watching kids in a candy store. We went through each pair, but Spook and Bubbles had stolen Dad's heart from the picture on the web page.
I am doing some really serious looking into three MAJOR events for this year. We need help.
Looking for the building has proved to be frustrating to say the least. The first had no parking, but was a good price, but would take $70,000 to renovate. Yes, you read that right.
Our donors said, ok, let's up the amount of the donation, so on to some other buildings. One was ok, not perfect, but it could do, and it did have parking. Go back with the contractor and hubby in tow along with one of our donors.
Hubby and the contractor found black mold, places where it leaked, and the general population area would take lots to make work. Not to mention the cost of the quarantine.
In between the two buildings I had looked at one that was like walking into the twilight zone. The owner had passed in July I believe, and everything is still sitting there. Nothing was taken out of the building.
All the windows are covered up, including the basement, and there is a hole in the roof. So we dismissed it the first look through. Then we had all decided that maybe we should look at it again, if we can get a good price, fix it up so we can use it, in a couple of years, build new on the lot, and tear it down.
None of us realized what it was really like. I never heard a contractor make such funny noises before. The basement door is a hidden door in the floor, and it gets VERY wet, the sandstone foundation is falling apart, the main floor support has two by fours keeping it up. Fixing the roof, which basically would be ripping off the whole roof, rafters and all and build a new one. (Yes it was that bad.) Fixing the foundation, taking the maze of walls, taking out the red shag carpet, and not to mention repairing the main support and foundation, well would be more than the building is worth.
So, after all is said and done, we are thinking, that maybe, if the owner would take a low price because of the building problems, we could tear it down and build new. From scratch, the best possible design for a ferret shelter within our budget. So the cost has gone up, and we need help.
Before I can commit to one possible event, I need to line up 100 volunteers. If I can do that, there is a good chance we can be one of the charities at the Cleveland Texas Hold 'em tournament.
Another is a Vegas Comes to Cleveland Night, again, volunteers are needed. Donations of prizes that people can buy with their winnings (play money). Donations of food and such. Location, people to sell tickets. Lots of work.
A medieval Murder Mystery, again, volunteers are needed, location, food. Prizes, auction stuff, you name it. Everyone would be encouraged to attend in period garb, and everyone would be handed and envelope. The players would be members of the audience themselves.
We will be selling paving bricks. I think it would be nice to have a nice brick area with messages. Maybe even a wall.
If you can commit time to help organize, make calls, help out at the events them selves, scrounge up donations of food, items to use as silent auction, door prizes and such. Please contact me at: ferrets_unlimited@sbcglobal.net
The tentative time frame for these is April, June, and late September. If you can commit, please do so.
What we do will depend on you, and your helping hand.

Sorry....I accidently posted this comment to the wrong blog.
I would love to help out as much as I can, and my brother and I will be volunteering at the shelter on Thursday mornings as often as possible. I would love to see the shelter get into a building that can be customized for the ferrets so please let me know what I can do to help. I am anxiously awaiting the adoption of Stitch and Candy, and I know Mocha can't wait either!
