Ok, this is what is happening. After looking at several places, and getting quotes on what it would cost to revamp the existing building to accommodate the shelter, we found out that it would be much more economical (but still EXPENSIVE) to purchase a property and demolish the building to build new.
We found a spot in Parma, (and to be honest, the building needed to be torn down, huge holes in roof, and a flooding basement)and bid on it. They accepted, title transfers on March 15, give or take a day.
End of May the donors, the building contractor and I are meeting with the City of Parma to get plans approved and such. After that, demolition and building will begin. The shelter should be ready by September. Which in reality is not that far away.
Here is the problem, I need the ferret community to help. We are selling pavers, etched glass block, and design your own tiles to help cover the cost of equipping the shelter. And they will also help with some of the building costs by doing the finishing touches in the public areas.
I am doing a local MASS mailing, bought an ad in Ferrets Magazine, trying to organize two fund raisers.
Nothing is happening. Want to help? Pass the word about our fund raiser, know someone who can help organize and cater a medieval Murder Mystery Dinner? Have theme call. Know business that would donate door prizes and raffle prizes for a Casino Night? By all means tell them about us. Maybe they would like to help sponsor an event, or sponsor a table at our Casino Night.
Something as simple as contacting your local TV station and newspapers could help. Just tell them about this little shelter who has this anonymous donor helping them obtain a NEW building.
This is a quote from another board I belong to. "To see a real shelter out there in public and not in a home it will raise public awareness I am sure. It will start to show people there are other animals out there that need homes not just dogs and cats. Truly shows ferrets are a leading pet in the US too." She is from Florida.
It is true. What better way to raise awareness and start people and foundations thinking that "Hey, this isn't one of those flavor of the month pets, there really is a need." Perhaps it can start getting some respect for the home run rescue/shelters. That is where this place started, in a small apartment.
The biggest thing I am asking for is some of your time to make a few calls, send emails. I know time is valuable. And if you can, donate a dollar.
Remember, little donations add up to BIG miracles.
Thanks folks.
